Our First Child - Ker-Vie

10 Mar 2002 will forever be etched on my mind as it was the day before Ker-Vie was born. Even though it was six years ago, everything is still vividly clear as though it only happened yesterday.

I remembered that morning Hui Min felt a bit of discomfort due to minor contractions and she has the feeling that Ker-Vie is ready to come. As Ker-Vie is our first child and both of us didn't have any experience at all, Hui Min felt a bit nervous and therefore refused to be admitted to the hospital. I wanted to make her feel more comfortable, hence I tried distracting her by putting on a movie which I bought a few days ago. The movie was "Fat Choi Spirit 哩咕哩咕新年财" starring Andy Lau, Gigi Leung, Lau Ching-wan and Louis Koo. After we finished watching Disc 1, we had fishball noodles for brunch. Hui Min then took a warm bath and we headed to hospital.

We reached Hospital Pantai, Bangsar at about 12pm. After we have registered, we went up to labour ward. Hui Min changed her clothes and waited inside the ward. The nurse came to check Hui Min and to see how much she has dilated. The dilation at that time was only 2cm. The nurse told us not to worry and that the baby would still take quite a while to make her grand entrance. She said that we can take a rest first. The nurse also strapped the fetal monitor onto Hui Min's tummy to monitor the baby's heartbeat.

At about 6pm, Hui Min's gynae Dr. Choong came to check on her, and told us that she has dilated up to 4cm during the afternoon. He then broke Hui Min's amniotic sac so that labour could progress faster. After her water broke, Hui Min started experiencing major contractions. From 6pm till midnight, she was in such great pain that she has to rely on the gas for pain relief.

When Hui Min has fully dilated, Dr Choong prepared to welcome the baby. However, due to the baby's size and Hui Min's difficulty in pushing her out, Dr Choong recommended the use of the vacuum to assist in easing the baby out of the birth canal. Past midnight, Ker-Vie was finally born, healthy and perfect at 3.8kg.

The 4th day of Ker-Vie, back to home.
